CREATURES AND CREATORS - STORIES FOR THRILLER NIGHTS

"If there was no way to advance towards the enemy, it was necessary to make the enemy advance towards them." Horror is one of my favorite literary genres, especially classic horror stories. So I was really excited when I heard about Creatures and Creators, a collection of four short stories written by Brazilian authors, which reimagines some of the most iconic horror stories. Carolina Munhóz, Frini Georgakopoulos, Raphael Draccon and Raphael Montes are some of the current names that have been calling my attention the most, so when the opportunity came, I was very keen to fall into this reading. And despite one or two questions, the book gave me exactly what I wanted. Four of the most popular contemporary Brazilian authors, Raphael Draccon, Carolina Munhoz, Frini Georgakopoulos and Raphael Montes have come together to reinvent classic horror tales. Frankenstein lives, and is in a slum in Rio. Rumors indicate that Dracula may be the owner of a new and trendy nightclub. In an arts college, there is a legend that says a ghost helps beautiful young women to sing in an abandoned theater. A mystery surrounds the life of a dentist and family man who is about to discover his most monstrous side. Four classics of fear reinvented by four Brazilian writers for nights of scares, terror and screams. Honestly, the main positive point of the book, for me, is its central idea. 4 authors, with different styles, and different voices, reinterpreting some of the best-known characters in the horror stories. It's the kind of premise that looks like it was made for me. And the book manages to take that idea in very interesting directions. The variety between the stories is super cool, and for sure everyone will find something to like in each of the stories. And the book manages to balance the classic horror aspect very well with the style of modern literature. It was a really fun read I really enjoyed all the stories, and I can't quite define my favorite. Every story has its moments that I liked, but perhaps what made me most satisfied was that of Raphael Draccon. The others are also good, but Draccon's was the one with the least details that bothered me. In Frini Georgakopoulos' tale, it was the dialogues, in Raphael Montes's it was the plot twist. Carolina Munhóz's almost won me but something at the end of it just didn't fit the way I would like. But they are all well written and deliver a really cool retelling of well-known characters. But the problem with this short story format is that you get the feeling that there is no time to get completely involved with any of the stories. I would really like each of the stories to be a little longer, but I don't know if this is necessarily a bad thing. After all, “I wish there was more to read” is not a criticism. But one thing the book manages to do is give a sample of each author's writing to those who don't know their work. I already read a book by Raphael Draccon, but this reading made me very interested in learning more about the writing of Carolina Munhoz, Frini Georgakopoulos and especially Raphael Montes. Another thing that the book does is make you want to know more about classic history. Through the references in the stories, particularly the names of the characters, the stories made me want to know more about the original stories, which is really cool. In fact, it would be very interesting to see a second volume of this collection, after all there are several other classic stories that can be reinvented. To start, how about the Werewolf, the Mummy, The Invisible Man and the Monster of the Black Lagoon? Especially now that the Universal Monsters universe is returning to the cinema. Overall, Creatures and Creators was a very interesting read. Four very talented Brazilian authors presenting new versions of some of the most iconic monsters in literature. Despite one or two details, and the fact that I would like the stories to be a little more extensive, this book gave me exactly what I wanted. I'm really leaving here my request for Record to continue this collection because I like to see these monsters gaining attention. 🖤📚Note: ☆☆☆☆☆| Title: Creatures and Creators - Stories for Thriller Nights | ISBN: 9788501301499 | Year: 2017 | Specifics: 248 pages | Editor: Record| Genre: Short Stories, Fantasy, Brazilian Literature, Horror| Finishing: Hardcover| Measurements: 21.4 x 14.2 x 1.6 cm|Cutting: UnpaintedReview on GoodReads (Creatures and Creators - Stories for Thriller Nights)Buy on Amazon (Creatures and Creators - Stories for Thriller Nights) Raphael Montes (Rio de Janeiro, September 22, 1990) is a Brazilian writer and screenwriter of police literature.
